White people get so angry at the phrase, “You cannot be racist towards white people.”
I will never understand why.
Why are you so angry that you are being treated as actual human beings? You are not reduced to caricatures, but portrayed as characters. You are treated fairly, judged not by your skin tone, but by the ways that you carry yourselves, by your actions.
Why do you want to experience racism so badly? It is not fun to be mocked, dehumanized, attacked, killed, incarcerated simply for daring to exist. It is not fun to know nothing of your history or family because it was torn apart, whether through distance or death. It is not fun to hear, at every turn, comments reminding you of your lesser status as humans.
Do you really want to turn on the tv, open a magazine, watch a movie, play a video game, and not see yourself? Or, even better, to only see yourself as a criminal, as a drunk, a mocking stereotype, or as someone to be killed off? Or would you rather see fleshed out, well-written characters with lives and personalities and feelings? I know which I’d rather pick.
If I were a white person, the phrase, “You cannot be racist towards white people,” would be the best thing I could ever hear."
One would assume that scientists, who are trained to think objectively, are completely immune to gender discrimination. However, a recent Yale study by Corinne Moss-Racusin and colleagues suggests otherwise.
The researchers created a fictional student and sent out the student’s application to science professors at top, research-intensive universities in the United States. The professors were asked to evaluate how competent this student was, how likely they would be to hire the student, how much they would pay this student, and how willing they would be to mentor the student. All of the applications sent out were identical, except for the fact that half were for a male applicant, John, and half were for a female applicant, Jennifer. Results showed that, with statistical significance, both male and female faculty at these institutions were biased towards male students over female students.
Data from the study shows that on average, science faculty was willing to pay the male applicant about $4,000 more per year.
"The gender gap doesn’t exist"
"We don’t need feminism"
"Maybe he just worked harder"
"*any MRA bullshit*"
“But if you forget to reblog Madame Zeroni, you and your family will be cursed for always and eternity.”
not even risking that shit
So this is an ad put forth by anti-marijuana activists in Florida, where voters will soon have an opportunity to vote on Amendment 2, which would amend the Florida Constitution to ban the implementation of any “criminal or civil penalties” against doctors, patients, or registered treatment centers for prescribing, possessing, or distributing marijuana for the treatment of a “debilitating” illness.
It’s hard to think of a more cynical, dishonest way to attack a medical marijuana initiative. This ad single-handedly misappropriates activism against sexual assault, demonizes patients with debilitating illnesses, and insults the integrity of every medical professional in the state of Florida.
The ad misappropriates activism against sexual assault by suggesting that legalizing medical marijuana will subject intimate partners to an increased incidence of rape (which has not occurred in a single state that has legalized marijuana, medical or otherwise). It demonizes patients with debilitating illnesses by implying that patients who get prescribed cannabis will use it for nefarious purposes, such as to drug and rape intimate acquaintances (again, no evidence of this occurring at all). And it insults the integrity of doctors and nurse practitioners by implying that they would ever willingly prescribe cannabis to someone who in their professional opinion, doesn’t seem like they would benefit from it in light of all other treatment options (because you know, even though many of them spend six figures on med school and are subject to the continuing scrutiny of state licensing agencies, there’s an army of them waiting to throw away their careers by prescribing cannabis to their patients all willy nilly).
In the world of law, there’s a saying: If the facts aren’t on your side, pound on the law. If the law isn’t on your side, pound on the facts. If neither the facts nor the law are on your side, pound on the table. The facts are clearly not on the side of Anti-marijuana activists, and soon, the law won’t be either. So they’ve opted to do the marketing equivalent of pounding on the table. Of course, if you reach that point, you’ve already lost the argument on all the merits and you’re just trying to scare people with whatever far-fetched scenarios you can gin up. Which is precisely what this ad is trying to do.
